Genetically Modified Organisms or GMO’s are a big topic, one that is not only controversial, but raises strong emotion in many people. While we at Kiss My Tractor are not prepared to take sides, we do represent mainstream farmers who use sustainable methods, as well as farmers who grow their crops organically as well as naturally raised. With this said, we wish to let you know about a new website which tells the scientist’s point of view regarding GMOs.
A council of leading biotech companies, comprised of Bayer CropScience, BASF, Monsanto, DowAgro-Science, Dupont Pioneer and Syngenta, has launched this website in order to answer questions of the public – that’s you and me – about genetically modified organisms. The website discusses what GMOs are, how they are made, and why farmers use them.
There is a global need for increased production to meet food demand, and biotechnology is one tool to attain that, alongside organic, sustainable and conventional systems. Additionally, farmers are receiving pressure to use fewer pesticides and herbicides on their crops, and GMOs aid in that especially. Cathy Enright, executive director of the Council for Biotechnology Information, said that “Whatever we in science, development and agriculture can avail ourselves of to be able to provide an ample, nutritious food supply, we’re for it.”
